My brother (69) is staying with me following hospitalization for COPD. Any advice finding help for him?

He lives in Port Gibson, on the canal and his home is in poor condition. He wants to return there. I am working on getting repairs etc. done but am concerned that conditions that led to his hospitalization include poor self-care and depression. All he does at my house is sleep and watch TV. I don't know how to address these with him or find ways to help him. Can you refer me to any services or provide advice so that I can help him. Thank you,

There's a long hard NY winter ahead. (I live near Buffalo) and I think he would be safer in Assisted Living if you can get him there. With proper meds for his depression, and meals with friends, he might perk up. If he was a wartime vet, call the VA for help.

Start here: http://www.aging.ny.gov/NYSOFA/FindHelp.cfm On Tuesday, start calling to find out what help you can get him. But he's got to want help. It sounds like you find the topic difficult to address with him - why? Does he deny he's got any issues? Does he resist help? Is he a veteran? Tell us more about his history, so we can make better suggestions about how to deal with it. But again, bottom line is, he needs to want to get help - it sounds like getting his obvious depression treated is the important first step. Does he currently take any anti-depressants?
