Mom already lives in asst living and qualified for hospice. Will Medicare pay for AL?

If already living In assisted living facility, and now dr. Has recommended hospice care, can patient remain at assisted living facility for next 6 months with Medicare paying for room and board while patient being treat their by Hospice staff?

Ron - will the AL allow for a hospice qualified resident to continue to stay there?

I would suggest you carefully and clearly speak with the AL regarding this. Usually if they are living in a facility and need hospice, they will need to be in a NH as their level of care is what a NH can provide. Hospice is going to be provided by an outside vendor (like VITAS, or Compassus or Southern Care - which are bigger nationwide hospice providers or a smaller local ones) who are directly paid by Medicare. The hospice group works in tandem with the nursing staff @ the facility. Hospice does not do 24/7 care, that is the aspect that the NH does. AL isn't designed for 24/7 care & seem to expect residents to be able to do their ADL's by & large on their own. If mom is on hospice, I bet she can't do ADL's.

Medicare pays for hospice but not for Assisted Living.

Nope, they won't. Read the paperwork thoroughly.

I was told that if we moved my husband into a hospice facility that the room and board portion would not be covered by Medicare. I was also assured that there were some "scholarship" funds available if that became necessary. I don't think Medicare covers the room and board portion in an ALF. However, if Medicaid is already paying for it, that can continue, along with Medicare paying the hospice care charges.

Check this out with the particular hospice service you would use. It should be a very easy question for them to answer.

Medicare will not pay for room and board at the ALF. They will only pay for the hospice services. If she was moved to a hospice facility, that would be paid for. Since she is already in the ALF, I personally would not move her, it seems like she has the funds for the ALF. Death is stressful enough.
