Are there any guidelines specific to this sort of work that I will need to follow?

Does anyone know or know where i can find out? I am wanting to start a care by donation for the elderly in my community and this will include up to 4 hours of personal care, laundry, chores, errands, etc. What i am wanting to know is if there are any guidelines anyone knows about that i will need to follow? With the price of care skyrocketing, i would like to try and help as many people as i can whether they can afford it or not with a better way of life, nearing the end of their life. Its hard believing that we work our entire lives and save what we can just to give it all away at the end for quality care. There has to be a better way to be able to live and die at home if we so chose. Thanks for your help and information.

Definitely suggest you volunteer with an established organization, as Pam and Kathy suggested. Trying to run your own "charity" on a donation basis could expose you to all sorts of legal issues, not to mention the fact that you will very likely be dealing with clients that have dementia, and that sometimes comes with irrational personality changes, including the patient accusing the caregiver (or in your case, the volunteer) of stealing or other types of wrongdoing. It would be better for you in the long run to be under the umbrella of a larger organization that will do all the background checks, provide training, etc - for your own protection.

Try your nearest Red Cross. They could use you.
