We want to take my Mom out of a nursing home due to inadequate care. Will we have recourse?

she has been there for three days --- will we have to out of pocket recourse to indequate care --- she had caked stool on her bottom when we visited her

I will definitely suggest personal care homes ,the residents get personal care at these facilities.I work as a Nurse i know it visiting different places and i also own one where we give that personal care to all our residents

I agree that you should give that place some time, but stay vigilant and report any of your concerns to the nursing supervisor right away. My dad often has to sit in a dirty Depends after dinner while the CNAs put other patients to bed. If it were up to my mom (who's there with him every evening) he would get changed immediately but even at an NH that has a good CNA/staff ratio it takes time for them to attend to everybody. And the more time you can spend there, especially during this transition period, the more you will learn about day-to-day operations including how often she gets changed and how many CNAs are responsible for how many patients. At this point I think you need more information to go in before you consider transferring her. We had my dad is a place that seemed great at first but turned out to be horrible. It was after about 3 weeks of moving him in there that we knew there were problems.

britt, issues that happen at a nursing home can also happen under your own roof if caring for an elder that needs hands-on care. That caked stool could have happened after she was taken to the bathroom/Depends and was cleaned up.

Curious, how did you know she had caked stool on her bottom when you visited her? I noticed your Mom move from assistant living [per your profile] over to the nursing home.... diminished mobility or rehab?

I know you want the best care for your Mom, but unless your hire someone to be with her at all times throughout the day, one on one care, things will happen.

Give it a chance. It's only been 3 days.

You need to get the director of nursing and social worker involved in her care. Is she resistant to being bathed or cleaned up? Don't throw up you hands after three days because of one issue.
