How do I dismiss a caregiver for my Dad who doesn't give adequate care?

He has given my father un-prescribed antibiotics. He hasn't been getting his prescribed medicine correctly. This person was making my father put his feet in water that was to hot. Told my Dad to stop complaining. He was taking money from his checks even though he is living there rent free and pays no bills. My father has dementia.

Very heartbreaking story. You need to act and act immediately. First there is abuse and exploitation going on, second your father's health is in danger. How can he/she be giving your father medication that is not or have never been prescribed for him? Also you mentioned that your dad has not been taking his medication as required? Adherence /compliance to treatment is very important. Is the caregiver certified to administer medication? Please you need to let the person go don't wait another day. You can also report to the state .

There are renters rights and eviction notice requirements you might have to consider, IF you don't have enough to file an abuse report, file a serious complaint with an agency, or call in the police because he has committed theft, unless he can account that the money was being spent on Dad's needs. It does sound this goes beyond "not giving adequate care" and is crossing into exploitation, harm and injury territory. Sorry this is happening!

I wouldn't give him notice, I'd be worried about retaliation from someone so uncaring and untrustworthy. I'd show up very early in the morning and say, we've hired someone else for this position, I'll help you pack up. Here's some severance pay to help you on your way....don't leave until he's gone, then have all the locks changed, and bank card passwords.

With two-weeks pay and a firm goodbye.

But if this person lives with your father it may be more complicated. Is he a friend? Relative? Are you paying him for the caregiving (in addition to living there rent-free)? Is he from an agency? Does you dad like him and want him to stay?

Please explain the situation in more detail, unless this is a straight-forward employment situation where you can simply tell him his services are no longer required and give him two weeks severance pay.
