I'm caregiver for husband (86) who has Alzheimer's and has had a stroke that's made it very difficult to walk. Any ideas?

He has terrible back pain due to arthritis in lower back. He takes Oxycodone for pain every 4 hrs or as needed. Now he's constipated and I don't know how to treat that without having him develop the opposite problem. Since he moves so slowly, it takes him a while to get to the bathroom. Any ideas? Does anyone know of a laxative that is gentle and won't give him the runs. Thanks for any help you can give me.

No, he has not had PT. He is very frail and way gone with AZ. He has multiple other health problems and with his doctor's full agreement, our goal now is just to keep him comfortable and safe. He does use a walker but moves very slowly due to a stroke that caused his left leg to be very weak and he has drop foot syndrome. So he moves very slowly. I'm going to try Colace daily and just stay close for a few days until we see how it works.

Has he had physical therapy and does he use a walker or similar to make it easier for him to get around? Medicare should pay for some PT for him, if he hasn't had it already. Just a thought.

My mom uses bran cereal crushed up, prunes apple sauce all chopped up with melted butter. It tastes good and it does the job. It makes a great breakfast and if you give it to him at the same time every day
,you will know hes regular every day

Prunes contain a certain kind of sugar (sorbitol) that causes our colons to start working, so that is a great suggestion. If that doesn't work, check out Miralax, which is now over the counter. My dad's doc prescribed it for my dad when he was constipated. You can take it every day and it's very mild. You should be able to buy it at any drug store.

A stool softener is highly recommended when on oxycodone. Daily consumption of prunes is a great idea. Apple cider works too, fresh from the mill.

Shirley, my Dad uses old fashioned prune juice.

He had major issues with constipation and we were running back and forth to the drug store for this over-the-counter med and that over-the-counter med. Nothing seemed to work until Mom mentioned prune juice. All is well now :)
