My Mom needs occasional assistance with transportation to medical appointments and shopping. Is that an option available?

She would require the provider have a vehicle that she can get into easily - not too small and low or too large and high.

It took me 6 months to figure out that my mom's "I don't want to go out" was actually fecal incontinence . Her attempts at self treatment (Immodium and colasce, every day) finally landed her in the hospital with a severe electrolyte imbalance.

Is she seeing a geriatric doctor? Mom's regular gp, who looked at her med list each visit, never questioned why she was taking both. As Pam says, there maybe something else going on.

I think babalou is right, if she is refusing to go out, something else is wrong. She may not be able to walk far. She may be incontinent. She may have memory loss and gets confused. Look deeper.

Linney, I should mention that there is no such thing as the perfect vehicle . When an elder starts to complain that your car her neighbor's car, the local taxi and bus are all too uncomfortable for various reasons, it usually means something else is wrong. Like they can't figure out how to shop,n what things should cost how to make sure they are getting the correct change, etc. In other eords, it a smoke screen. You can preserve mom's dignity by getting in home grocery drlivery, meals on Wheels, visiting nurse service, etc.

Linney, you would need to check with your local Council on Aging to see what is available in your city or county.... some areas have small transport buses. Or as ba8alou had mentioned above, call some of the local taxi services and see what they have available.

I noticed in my area, the taxi's most are either SUV's or energy efficient Prius'.

How about a local taxi service?
