When a senior can no longer care for mentally ill adult child. Any advice?

LadyBee,This is one of the worst things a parent can face - how to make sure that a mentally and/or chronically ill adult child is cared for after we are gone. Our system isn't set up well for many people in these circumstances - many who have high IQs - and it's heartbreaking.

I see that you are in Ridgefield, NJ which I googled online and discovered is in Bergen County. There is a NAMI affiliate there and they have a web site.

How old is the person?

What is their mental illness?

Check your local half-way houses that will provide room and board for him while taking most of his social security disability benefits. Have you not been able to stabilize him on medications? What kind of care must you provide? I really need more information.

OP, if you want some help you need to be more detailed.

Oh boy. We have been posting on a thread where the person with mental illness can no longer receive care and/or support from mom who has had a stroke, and it is really really a big hairy mess of a situation for them. NAMI sounds great, and the reality is the transition may be very rough if there has not been ample preparation and good supports are not already in place. Start the conversations with psychology, psychiatry, and social work to make plans for support ASAP.
