Mom was placed on Hospice without my knowledge. What do I do?

She is in assisted living (alzheimers) but I am the POA. I am, and have always been my mother's POA. She has alzheimers & macular degeneration and is in assisted living. I pay $3,000/month out-of-pocket. She mostly needs reminded of things and needs help bathing, etc. I just learned she has been on hospice! I never signed anything and was never asked. Can they do this? Can one of my relatives do this? I am now concerned that she is not getting the medical treatment she deserves. What should I do? Isn't this against the law?

Another idea, your mom may have consented to Hospice. Call the facility social worker and ask for her help in figuring how this transpired.

The first thing would be to ask the facility or hospice admin how this happened when you, her POA did not request it. And no, unless someone else has a POA for her, then only you should be able to request. The one exception could be her doctor recommending it, but one would assume he/she would recommend it to you. Hospice is extremely helpful for the elderly and their families, normally most considerate for all involved, talk with them first.
