Is this work arrangement legal?

I was hired as a live-in aide by a third party here in California. I work every night from 9pm to 8am, and since I don't pay rent, I'm only paid for one night a week. That amounts to four paid nights a month. If I'm to take a night off, I have to forfeit my paid night to the staff that covers me. And if I want to take more than one night, I have to pay the relief staff out of pocket.

Example: I took 4 nights off in March. The third party employer paid one of those nights and I had to pay the other 3.

Is this legal?

Forget about legality, that only matters in court.....just be practical and get a job with a real paycheck and an apartment where you pay rent.

I don't know about the legality of it, but if you are not satisfied, it shouldn't be too hard to find other caregiving jobs. Maybe you would be better off getting paid for all the hours you work and paying for your own room somewhere else.

I have never heard of live-in aides being charged rent, which is essentially what your arrangement amounts to. Is this 7 nights a week, or 5?

This just sounds too squirrely. I'd find another job.

Forgot to mention that the boss refused to pay me for that week and the next since, and by her own mouth, 'You took four nights off this month'
