There are restrictions on VA Benefits and it can take 6+ months to receive them (however, I believe they are retro active once approved). The Veteran had to be serving during period of ware (WWII, Korea, Viet Nam, Desert Storm, etc.). They also had to have a minimum number of days service in what is considered a theater of war (it is not very many days as I recall). Widows' of veterans qualify for assistance as well. Check out this link for more info and what you have to do to apply: http://www.benefits.va.gov/persona/veteran-elderly.asp
Go to the Senior Living tab at the top of the page. Click on assisted living and then on costs of senior living. There is a section on VA Aid and Attendence. Do any of the ALs in your area accept Medicaid after a certain number of years of private pay?
