I have a brother (80) with dementia. What care options should I consider?

He can no longer drive and lives 1.5 hrs away from me. I go up once a week. I am applying for guardianship with his son. My brother refuses to pay some bills or stay home. Sometimes he walk to town (4 Mi) 3 times a day in all temps 0 to 20. Recently he has been wandering at night. What care options should I consider?

Look for a community that has a wide scope of care. Maybe he can go into Assisted Living for a few years, before needing memory specific care?

If you get a temp. guardianship, you can move him. What are his funds like? Will he be able to private pay? If not, get in touch with your State's Dept of Aging or Health.

I would move him to a AL or nursing home, if you can't, check with the local police and see if they have a Silver Alert system incase he wonders and becomes lost. They will look for him pronto and not wait 24hrs. Does anyone have POA ?

He should not be alone and be out walking out in the cold and particularly at night. You and his soon need to apply for an emergency guardianship so that he could be placed in a nursing home with a memory care unit which will give him more safety than he has now.
