Why do urinary tract infections cause dementia symptoms to worsen?
UTIs are mentioned a lot on this site but I've never read why/how they can cause, hallucinations, agitation, etc in those who have dementia. Thank you in advance.
I think it affects the blood which runs through the whole body. MIL goes really batty, and doesn't remember when she is in that state. Blood infection, kidneys filter so it has to do a whole number on the filtering system. There not good. Makes the patient look crazy and act crazy.
Both urinary and respiratory infections affect brainwave activity to the point of producing delirium. Epileptics may experience increased seizure activity. The chemical balance of the brain is a very delicate thing. Medicines are given in milligrams-- 1 mg is one thousandth of a gram. That's too small to pick up! It has to be mixed with a whole lot of inert powder just so you can find it.
