Where can I find a massage therapist to come into a nursing home and help the elderly?

Call the massage schools and ask for a referral for someone trained in massage for the elderly.

WHOA. Anyone providing services in a Nursing Home has to be licensed and insured and MUST register with the NH administration for approval before coming on the premises. State Health Dept regulations apply to this situation.

I agree with freqflyer, you need to be very careful with elders, not only for frail bones, but there skin is so much thinner than a younger person. I would get someone more experienced and also be there when the massage happens so you can see how your loved one handles it.

I wouldn't want a newbie student to work on an elderly person unless the school specializes in massages for frail individuals. It would be way to easy to break a bone.

I agree with calling the massage school. They could make a day of it and bring in students and a licensed instructor. Everybody wins and it doesn't cost anything!

Just check with your nursing facility first. I wanted to get a message therapist for my mom and the facility said that they would need to go thru a credentialling process for that person to come in and provide services. I believe it has something to do with their liability. In the mean time I have been working with the administrator for them to hire someone that all the residents could use. The facility would do the credentialling and the masseuse would be available to anyone who wanted an appointement.

Anybody can hire a massage therapist, for themselves or their senior relative. Call the masseuse and make sure they have had success with seniors, and make an appointment. Be sure to tip generously!

You might also check with the local massage therapy school. They have hours they must complete to achieve their licensing requirements in most states. I wish you success in your search.

Check with angieslist.com or call your local Area Agency on Aging. You may try lavocational.com for the massage school, students may need clients to hone their skills.

Is the nursing home in favor of having a massage therapist coming into their facility? If yes, check with your local Council on Aging to see if they have a name of professional certified therapist who is willing to travel to his/her clients. If not, then you might have to do your own research... just make sure they are certified, have county business license, and have worked with the elderly.
