My FIL is in a nursing home, now on hospice care. What can we try to offer him to eat?

I know you can't make them eat, but now he has thrush and it looks painful. What she we try to offer him ?

If he is swallowing the medication, the doctor can put him on pills, such as fluconazole (Diflucan) or itraconazole. These treat fungal infections systemically, so don't need to dissolve in the mouth. The pills are small, so should be easy to swallow, even if his esophagus is sore.

I checked on if someone with thrush should eat sugar. It is on the avoid list. I hope you can interest him in some plain yogurt. Just tell him it is to soothe his sore mouth. The medicines can take a couple of weeks to have a noticeable effect, so the yogurt may help until then. There are some other "home remedies" for thrush, but I don't know how effective they are.

Hi I'm not sure about thrush but I do know that my grandma had to hear that she was starving herself from the nurse and let her know it was time to come home and she started eating again and they are correct. we are in cinti and our hospice is awesome they do whatever we wish for her we wanted her to stay on meds and to treat every ailment and they do and please don't let them give him morphine or they call it roxinol it will only make him eat less and sleep more unless his situation is very painfull they have suppositories with Tylenol if it hurts too swallow. if he's like my grandmother he doesn't like purée foods I would get her to drink chocolate/peanut butter shakes for protein and fat to keep her going then she came home and ate like a piggy. pinto/great northern/navy beans for proteins but they need water to keep the beans moving along I had to quit my job to bring her home but its been worth it and I also get paid to take care of her and others she is ninety and she came home last June and did so well we took her off for therapy but she came down with asperating pneumonia and we are now clear of that but will not take her off again she did so much better on hospice good luck feel free to contact me if you like to talk more

How is hospice treating thrush? Don't let them tell you they can't treat, this is comfort care. As far as nourishment, how about ice cream?

Does hospice have him on an antifungal medication? These drugs are quite alright under hospice rules, because they help him to stay comfortable.

The best food I know for thrush is yogurt. I don't know if sweetened yogurt is okay, but maybe someone here will know. I'm sure that elders wouldn't prefer fruit yogurts to the plain.
