My dad is 90 has been living alone since my mom died in August. We had an aide coming every day to set up his meds, do light housekeeping, etc. He has vision and some hearing problems. Uses a cane but can maneuver steps okay. He got a UTI that caused him to faint. He's been in rehab a week due to the UTI and fall. I was wondering if it would be okay to take him home for a weekend and have our kids visit with him and then take him back to rehab. Our plan is to move him into assisted living after rehab and we want to do what's best for him. He's somewhat resistant about going to Assisted Living even though he's slowly coming around to the fact that living on his own isn't exactly feasible. I thought by taking him home periodically for a visit he could ease into Assisted Living. I'm not thinking "cold turkey" is the way to go but it may be.

How much longer does he have in rehab? I assume that he went to rehab from the hospital and it's being covered by the free days that medicare will give someone in rehab after being in the hospital? If so, then medicare will not want him leaving rehab for a random reason like a weekend visit to one's home and then return to rehab.
Stay the course you are on and don't add anything that would make things more difficult than they already are. Good luck and keep in touch.
