My mom was on Medicaid and living in an assisted living facility for approximately 2 yrs when she received an inheritance from the sale of a farm. If she runs out of money before the 5 year look back time and has to go back on Medicaid but is put on a penalty period, how will she pay the rent at the assisted living? They will take her social security check but that leaves $1,000 a month in rent that will be due. Can the facility make her move out if she can't afford the rent? Her dementia has increased in the last couple years and she needs lots of medical assistance. She could not live on her own as she would not be safe. Can they make family members pay the difference?

It may be the mom could be OK medically for NH level care right now and could do her final spend down as private pay for a couple of months @ the NH then stay as a "Medicaid Pending" resident.
