Mom and Dad both have Alzheimer's and live in my home along with our adult mentally handicapped nephew my husband who has cancer and our 27 yr old son who works a lot and helps when he can. I need to hire some in home caregiving but don't know how much to expect to pay. The care would be for both parents to include companionship, bathing, toileting, assist with meals and medications. Also not sure about liability, withholding taxes, issuing 1099, etc. since i will be in need of multiple caregivers I'm thinking the compensation should be the same for all. I'm leaning towards using reputable individuals versus an agency but would appreciate feedback. Thoughts?

You are also burdened with locating a replacement when someone calls in sick or does not show up at all. Pay rate varies by skill level. Companions are cheap, but do nothing. Bath aides a little higher, and anyone who passes medication higher still. Chauffeurs expect $25/hr including waiting time. At some point it is actually cheaper to move to Assisted Living. The biggest plus for us was that at ALF mom has lots of company.
