Sleep disruption. What can I do?

I am caregiver to an 89 yr old lady who is recouping from a broken hip and arm. My problem is she does not use the bathroom all day long but then needs to use the bedpan every 1.5-2 hrs every night! Napping is not possible. What can I do?

Yes, check with the doctor. Is she is on diuretics? They should be taken in the morning unless her doctor prescribes otherwise. It helps to get on a schedule during the day, put her on the commode or bedpan after meals and snacks and encourage her to try to go. And use depends at night.

If at all possible limit the amount of liquids your patient has after 6pm. Any night time pill taking, see if it can be allowed during supper as per her doctor's ok. Hopefully that will reboot her day time going....

Or could it be a situation where when your patient lays down for night time that there is pressure on her bladder thus the need for her to want to use the bathroom every couple of hours? There are AZO over-the-counter pills that might help, but first check with her doctor.
