yes, you have to pass a physical & mental exam, to be able to purchase LTC ins. USUALLY people buy these policies in their 50's or maybe early 60's, but many ins co's are getting out of offering these, because they're losing money left and right. my spouse & I bought ours about 5 yrs ago (he is much older than me). if you can't afford AL, then the only alternative, if you really need care, is to spend down to qualify for Medical Assistance.
If you don't already have long term care insurance by the time you need it , you can't just go out and buy it. It's something you have to have been paying premiums on for a while.
Health insurance NEVER covers asst living. You need to have a Long-Term Care insurance to cover AL. Also, MediCARE never (ever) pays for AL, and some state's MedicAID does not cover AL.
my mom's health insurance does not cover assisted living either at this time. will be applying for state Medicaid down the road but that needs to be approved by the state first.
