Does Medicaid try to recoup money from an inheritance from a medicaid recipient who inherits money for past services before they die?

My dad has been on medicaid the past 8 years. He is 69 and and also has medicare and attends va hospital for care. He is about to inherit about 29k. He longer needs to retain medicaid. He would like to use his inheritance to buy and newer car and some other things. He is not interested in any SNT trust. His only concern is would medicaid try to take his inheritance for the past services he received the past 8 years while on medicaid? Or do they just claim what ever is left after he passes?

I would consult with an Elder Attorney who knows Medicaid, before I spoke with Medicaid. Once Medicaid finds out about the money, they are likely to figure a way to convince him he owes it to them. An attorney could provide him with legal options that may be available to him. I doubt Medicaid would provide him with that.

Diane, you will need to call New York State's Medicaid offices. Rules and regulations are constantly changing. Impossible for any of us here to keep up with each State :(

By inheriting $29,000 it sounds like your Dad would no longer be able to get Medicaid. As for the State wanting that money to help pay for medical care used during the past few years that Medicare didn't pay, it depends on the rules/regulations of the State where your Dad lives... he or you would need to call your local Medicaid office.

Tell Dad not to spend that money just yet.

Not sure how to answer the question, as I have no experience with Medicaid. However I will throw out the fact that $29,000 won't buy as much these days as it used to, especially as cars go.

This will put the question back up to the top and maybe someone with experience will see it and have a better answer.
