Nursing homes don't 'force the sale' of anything. They get paid for their services by the family of the resident who lives there. When there aren't sufficient assets to pay for the services renered, families may apply for Medicaid. This is a program for the poor of this country. Medicaid is a federal program administered by the state of residence. State rules may vary. You should check with your state office of the aging when you feel that your assets will be running low.
If you have been denied by Medicaid, the Nursing Home can place a lien on his half of the property. If you have Medicaid, you must pay the share of cost written out in the agreement. Medicaid will not force you out of your home.
