My parents want to go to an outdoor event tomorrow. Any advice?

oulu67, is this event televised? (On local cable perhaps.) If you can think of some other way for them to enjoy this event, that would be safer. Do you know anyone who is going who could take a video for you? Have festive treats as you watch it with your parents. Or if this involves a special event for a family member, like a band concert or a graduation, etc. could you arrange a small gathering at their house, maybe the day before, so the family members can show off their costumes or gowns, etc.?

My husband suffered from the heat. He golfed with a league sponsored by a rehab facility for persons with handicaps. They had strict rules for not holding it when the heat index reached a certain point by 9 am. Even on days that didn't quite reach that level but were hot were very difficult for him (though he loved to be able to golf).

I really don't think the health risk is worth taking but I sure hope you can come up with something to take its place.

Vegaslady, I know how you must feel. I hate to disappoint mom and dad when they have their heart set on an outing. Especially when it is a favorite tradition. I also know that if anything happens, I will have to deal with it. I'd tell them that the Dr will not allow seniors out in the heat. Or I suggest a safer option, usually an indoor mall with ample handicap parking, restrooms, and seating areas that I am familiar with. Sometimes I have to be the bad guy for their protection, like when my son was little.

If they depend on you for transportation, don't take them. Tell them you heard of heat warnings for people with heart trouble to stay out of the heat. I live in Las Vegas where we just tied our previous record for 21 consecutive days of temps of 105 and above. Tell them vegaslady says don't push your luck when you've got a bad hand to start with.
