How can I encourage more water/drinks?

My wife, advanced Alzheimer's, will not drink enough water to stave off constipation and other related problems. She probably averages 10 to 20 ounces per day most days. Much of this is Ensure.

Does she like soups, smoothies, even milk shakes (generally not the most healthy food because of the ice cream, but it does have fluids)?

What about fruits - some like cantaloupe are juicy, and have the added benefit of containing vitamin C. Fruit salad is another option; mix up various fruits in a crushed or chunked pineapple base and add the pineapple juice.

Also, try just fruit juices...orange, pear, apricot....there's a variety of fruit juices that are a bit more expensive but are a bit thicker and not as watery as some of the juices. There are also a few blends of tropical fruits.

Sometimes you have to trick someone who's not drinking as much by giving them foods that are high in moisture, such as soups. There are in fact some summer fruit soups that could provide additional fluids.
