Is the ALF negligent?

My mom is in a NH. When mom needs to go, aide assists her in getting onto the toilet, then leaves. Mom pulls alert cord when she's finished. I don't believe that waiting for a resident to "finish" is expected or useful.

Amy, Mom is in an ALF, and she is very in control of her own mind (no dementia at all). Mom called me and very calmly told me exactly what happened. This ALF has recently been bought out by another and there are changes. I called and am waiting for some answers.

As an RN caring for clients in my home, I would fire the caregiver and move on. you have enough to deal with without creating a situation that would require more time away from Mom and her care. Make sure to rate this caregiver if you are able, if she came from a home care agency, let them know what happened and that she is Not to be sent back to care for Mom

Are you sure it was the aid that did not put the brakes on? Maybe your mom may have done it either transferring to or from the chair? It would be difficult to prove it was the aid. I would most likely talk to the director of the facility about what happened and your suspicion of staff not putting the brakes on. Maybe this person should not have left your mom alone? Perhaps some additional training for staff.
