Where to begin when moving into Florida's adult/aging services?
Hello, I am guardian for my dad and live in Ohio. I need to learn where to begin to establish services and see what he qualifies for in Florida (Orange County) before we move. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
I would start with the social worker at the hospital (if he has been inpatient very recently), they have the most up to date info. If he is currently in a facility, on M.A., ask the social worker at the facility he's in. It's not impossible to move from one state to another under M.A., but the states all have slightly different ways of doing things.
People who may be able to help you are: an elder law attorney...possibly the one that wrote the DPOA/guardianship paperwork up; The social worker at the hospital if he was recently hospitalized can be helpful; The recruiters at an assisted living facility can provide you with some information as well; Home health services can be prescribed by the physician if he meets the needs, or private duty (not paid by Medicare) if he doesn't have a prescription. Watch out for thieves, Orlando is rampant with them. Good luck!! Don't forget the banks; take the guardianship paperwork or DPOA with you, the are notoriously uncooperative there.
