How in the world do I know if my Mom (80) is in the drama mode or if something really is wrong?

I don't know what her condition is, but often dementia patients may not be able to properly report pain. My cousin had a fractured spine. The doctor said she had to be in pain, but sometimes she said she didn't have any. Other times, she would complain a lot. There are confusion and communication issues with dementia. If they have arthritis, then I would not doubt the reports of pain. Regardless of the history, I would try to let that go and focus on the present. Their brain can't be held to the same standard anymore.

What's going on? Can you describe what she's doing to make you unsure if she's just making a fuss or if there's really something the matter?

As far as her being a drama queen, she has been that way ever since I can remember. I am not saying she is not in pain, I am not saying arthritis should or is being dismissed, I have arthritis since I was 32 so I know the pain. I don't think the Lexpro helps some but thanks for the note on Cymbalta! I will ask her dr about that. The upset part, well that don't matter if I am upset or not, what matters is I can't figure out what is what with her so I can help.

I don't know what you mean by drama mode. I think Lexapro is for depression and anxiety. Do you think its helping her? My loved one has arthritis in her back and was also having pain from multiple fractures and anxiety. Cymbalta really helped her. It treats depression, anxiety and pain. I might discuss your mom's med with her doctor to see if hers may need adjusting to properly treat her pain and mood.

I'm not wildly keen on professionals who say things like 'fine-for-80.' What does that mean? She feels like crap but what should she expect at her age? I hope it doesn't, and I hope that what he means is that her test results are well within range; I just don't like the attitude.

We tend to dismiss arthritis as being par for the course - until we get it. Then it's a big deal. Is she prescribed any pain relief for that?
