The 5-year rule is used when applying for Medicaid. There is no time limit for Medicaid to collect funds to help pay for your Grandmother's care.
I am not sure, there could be a chance that if your Grandparents owned a home together, that medicaid could have placed a lien on half of the home.... the lien remains until the home is sold. There are exceptions, it depends on the Medicaid rules for the State that they had resided.
