What does Hospice at home actually do?

I am a Hospice Aid im surprised they didn't set u up.with a agency a hospice aide comes n fir at least 4 hrs ot more i do 12 im with an agency with give baths do vitals turn every 2 hrs assist whatever neefd to do.i even administer pre meds to them

Hospice care in your home is not 24/7...I know that a lot of people think this is how it works, but it doesn't. My dad and I cared for my mom (with ALZ) until she died at home. The hospice nurse came about every 3-4 days (3 at the end stage and 4-5 in the moderate to late stage), she checked on her meds and would change out her catheter, other than that not much. The real help came from the aides! They came 5 days a week (m-f) for about 2 hours. They bathed her, washed her up, and shampooed her hair once a week. They would help feed her and change her diaper in the morning. In the evening, my dad and I were on our own. The help they gave us did help relieve some of the pressure. We also had a volunteer that came once a week to just sit and be with my mom so my dad could get out of the house to do the grocery shopping etc. It is a very hard job to take care of someone with dementia, best of luck to you! No, hospice doesn't stay with you 24/7. They are just another layer of care for whatever care is in place. Like guestshopadmin had mentioned above, the nurses come to visit on a schedule and just to check on the patient, to make any changes to meds, etc. Then there are Aides/volunteers that will visit couple times a week to do a sponge bath and/or change the bedding. The is even a Chaplin service. And you can call the hospice group 24 hours a day, someone will be there to answer questions.

When I met with hospice for my Mom we have a committee meeting, I was there, my Dad, my sig other, the rehab social worker and the rep from hospice... to which she went over all the aspects of what they offered. I know for a spouse it is a deer in headlights moment and they probably didn't digest half of what was said. I know my Dad didn't.

I checked for a friend recently. There is a difference in the care provided for hospice in home vs. a hospice facility. If you elect Hospice nursing care in your home: This includes intermittent visits by a nurse to check on your symptoms. Nurses are also available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to visit if you need help. Live-in nursing care is not covered.
With hospice AT HOME you are not getting 24/7 care in your home with your loved one - you can call them in to do checks, etc. but you are not getting 1:1 medical care.
