Can dementia be brought on by a recent hospitalization for UTI?

Mom was diagnosed and treated for UTI. She has never been diagnosed with dementia, although we know she does get a little confused here and there. She always has symptoms of "sun downers" if she stays over in the hospital. Upon her return home, it has always gone away. This time it's different. It's almost like she is delirious. She started improving several days after returning home, and had a couple of "normal" days but all of a sudden, this morning it's like the switch has been turned on again to the confused state of mind.

I too, woule return to the er. The UTI may not have been completely treated. My mom had seven UTI's in a year at one point. Finally got a referral to a urogynecologist that put her on meds to keep them away. That was almost two years ago now, and no recurrence.

jujubeespmud, any type of hospitalization will confuse an elder. I read somewhere where 80% of elders get some type of delirium. I've seen that in both my parents when they were there.

The last time with Dad after a fall, he thought he was in a hotel and wanted to go downstairs to pay the bill. After 48 hours at home he was getting back to normal.

For my Mom, it was like that light switch, each new day we didn't know what to expect.

I would proceed to the ER if she's having behavioral symptoms like delerium. There's a lot that could be, some of it very dangerous. At the very least, call the doctor NOW so you know s/he knows about the symptoms.

It may be that the UTI has reoccurred. That happens a lot if it isn't completely cured during treatment. If she is delirious, you might want to take her to the ER to have them check. UTIs are absolutely miserable for the person and their caregivers.
