If your POA of a bank account, what can you do to get a signer off of it?

If you have POA of bank accounts and there is a person that was added to the account in the past. Access the account anymore or can u close it and reopen so they are no longer on it

Jessie, social security has its own for for establishing a POA sort of relationship with them. I do not know how it works or what documentation they need to have to change payee info. May be someone else will chime in. It is very quiet around here tonight though.

Who is the signer? If they are also coowner they would have to sign as well. If that is the case you may only be able to open a new account then transfer funds from the old account to the new. Then also notify social security and any other automatically paid bills or deposits of the new account information. Sometimes banks have a hard time doing this so you may need to change banks as well.

Is your mother still competent to visit or talk to the bank people on the phone? She could instruct them to remove the name if they will allow. Talk to the bank people about the easiest and best way to handle it. I imagine that your mother's SS check and perhaps others are on auto-deposit. If the bank can just remove the name of the signer, it would be ideal.

just a signer

Is the POA springing or standing. If springing you would need probably two doctor's letters stating incapacity of the account owner. Standing you can do anytime.

Something I just thought about, the SSA does not recognize POAs. Does anyone know a way to change the deposit information. Could it be done online if someone had the correct password?

You could close the account and open another, but you would have to make sure SS would have the new deposit information to receive checks. Taking the name off the account may be possible. It depends on if the person is just a signer or is joint on the account.

Is your mother still competent? If she is, is this what she wants to do? I would talk to the people at the bank to see what the easiest thing to do would be.
