Ramp vs wheelchair lift?

It seems that the cost to have a ramp installed in the front with a 50/50 would be way to expensive, so a wheelchair lift was mentioned. The other option is doing a ramp or the lift in the back.The back with either would be more expensive with modifications but easier to access,but the lift in the front would be cheaper minimal modifications but a little more work to access.Our front has 6 steps and the back has 4.The lift is 5000.00 plus tax and modifications.The ramp in the front could run 10,000, and I'm waiting on a quote for the ramp in the back.Someone said lifts may freeze in the winter,and I'm a New Englander.Any advice.Thanks

I would get the lift in the back. That's all the medivans in our area use. Even what I've seen individuals use in handicapped parking. I must say I've never seen a ramp on the side..nor a lift. Chicago here and verrrry cold. Never heard of that freezing problem. The lift will be much easier for everyone to use. That's where I'd put MY money.

The costs are frightening. I would be concerned about having only the lift as a way to exit unless there was a backup generator that would still work if there was a fire or other catastrophe. Six steps is very high, so a portable ramp wouldn't be so good. Maybe a lift in the front and a portable ramp in the back where there are only four steps??
