For my Mom the nurses needed to crush the pills and tried the apple sauce, oops, Mom doesn't like apple sauce.... so one nurse tried chocolate ice cream.... WE HAVE A WINNER !!

One funny thing happened, the hospital had given Mom a small dish of chocolate ice cream for dinner [no pills in it] and Mom said she didn't like the taste, she wanted the other chocolate ice cream :0

Her Dr. says to crush and mix, but that is only half working, We have an appointment In Jan and I'm considering stopping some of it. Liquid would be great but I suspect I would still wear it. She does not eat well anymore at all.

Applesauce is great for powdery meds. Yes, you can crush pills, but make sure you crush them well. Is she still eating well?

Just remember at the end of life everything does not have to be treated. She is beyond reason at this point so like any child pet or elder she does what comes naturally. Forcing crushed pills may lead to your loved one inhaling them which will lead to even bigger problems. Discuss with you Mom's Dr. what is really necessary at this point. Never crush long acting meds as this gives too great a dose at once.
Now this won't be very popular but most medications can be given rectally and work just as well. make sure the rectum is free of feces (yes you may have to manually evacuate.) not a fun job. Use a water based lubricant and make it part of her bowel routine. Do not mention pills or medications. Will it work maybe maybe not but it is worth a try.

Get an antibiotic that does not have a bitter taste. Ask the MD. There are also long-acting injectable antibiotics, given once a week. Ask the MD.

I found that dissolving crushed pills in a little grape soda worked best. Not a whole glass! Just a few swallows. But my husband was cooperative and understood that he needed to take the meds. If your loved one doesn't understand that it may be a different situation.

Be sure that crushing the pills won't interfere with their effectiveness. Also ask the pharmacist if the medication comes as a liquid.
