Can a family member caregiver be paid by Medicaid?

My wife and I are separated and living in different households. She is very sick. I have been her caregiver about 12 hours a day. She is on Medicaid so I wondered if I could get paid for all I am doing?

Unfortunately, the answer is no. However, given the level of care that it appears she needs (that you are providing) and that she's already on Medicaid, it should be relatively easy to secure a home and community-based waiver under Medicaid so that you can get some help with the caregiving (or perhaps give it up entirely if that's your desire.) In most states, an intermediate level of nursing home care is needed to qualify, not a skilled nursing level. You should consult with her Medicaid care coordinator or call your local area agency on aging to get the process started (they will do a home health care assessment and go from there).
