Must they take a shower once a week?

Terry512 Jan 2016
Most nursing homes assign the aides to either showers or baths every day but not for everyone. Usually there are so many people, they get a shower or bath twice or three times a week. They rotate patients until they get them all showered or bathed. If they patients fight them, as Alzheimer's patients tend to do, they just wipe them down with wet cloths and go on to the next patient. They are letting this patient get away with not showering or bathing at all. The roommate is obviously fighting them and the head nurse needs to be invoiced. I'm sure she knows already because they expect their RNs to take care of any problem so say something and if nothing is done about it, call the health department and report the home. That part is usually anonymous so there shouldn't be an backlash for your husband. It's a health problem too. I'm sure the roommate has bacteria in his area if he hasn't bathed in months. That's disgusting to go that long with showering. Maybe you can get a package of wet wipes and leave them on his bed or tray to use by himself. Maybe he's embarrassed about himself and doesn't want to ask.

Yes if your husband roomate is smelling bad it is due to lack of care and supervisor needs to get involved. I am a caregiver so i know that we are assigned showers every day

Nursing homes are required to give residents baths once or more a week. At my grandpa's nursing home, they give showers 3 times a week as for how well they give showers, I can't comment but my grandpa smells "okay", not distracting and not "fresh" either. If the roommate smells bad, take it up to the nurse and also to the management of the home. If they cannot take care of the smell, ask them to move your husband to another room because it is distracting and it is not good for his wellbeing.

Go to the Head Nurse and ask for help. If they ignore you, call the Health Department.
