Can you deduct assisted living costs (which are privately paid) on your income taxes?

My mother was ordered by her health care provider (Kaiser Permanente) into an elder care home for 24/7 assistance with everyday living chores. Bathing, cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc. My mother pays the monthly elder care home costs out of her savings, ssi, and pension. Can I deduct the cost of the elder care home on my mother's income tax filing?

Kim4u2, this can become complex thus I would highly recommend a CPA or a tax accountant to handle this. I need to do that with my own Dad.

You would need proof, such as a letter from Kaiser Permanente, establishing all the ADL's she is deficient on. The level of care fee is certainly deductible. The rent may be but only if she is unable to perform at least two ADL's.
ADL=activities of daily living.
