Chappy Asked February 2016

I never asked, "What to do if I'm ever accused of stealing."

The only way I've found to handle the accusations is to say, "Don't worry. I would never do that," and then walk away if needed. It really stings to have someone say something like that, but it happens quite often with dementia. It is easier for them to think someone has taken something than it is to think they don't remember what happened to it. Often they hide it from themselves in order to keep it safe, then forget where they hid it. It is a situation where I feel bad for everyone involved.

Chappy, it is important to protect yourself from this. If she has a social worker or a visiting nurse, discuss this with them. Also alert your 911 responders to an elderly person with Alzheimer's living in the house, just in case she calls them. At this point, get a sitter for her, even when you are gone for only a few minutes. Protect yourself from an unnecessary investigation.
