Traveling with mom who's in early stages of Dementia?

Suggestions to make her comfortable as we fly from Detroit to San Diego. Do I need medication for her?

raedbrown1 Mar 2016
She has flown before in 2015. She did okay on a non stop flight.

I took my elderly aunt (88) with dementia travelling. I made sure there were plenty of toilet stops, we went at her pace not mine. Allow plenty of time to get to the airport. I also took a Kylie with me, a protector for the bed, because we stayed in a motel. It is just a thought. I don't they are called 'Kylie' in the US, they are in N.Z. All the best, Arlene Hutcheon

Keep in mind she might not remember how she got from Detroit to San Diego . She might also need more time than you to resume her "normal" routine once she arrives. Make sure she has identity on her plus other important information. Hope you have a good trip!

raedbrown1, how does your Mom do when traveling locally? Or is she in her comfort zone so there is no problem? Has she flown a lot, or has it been quite a while?

My Dad [94] still thinks one can get to the airport 5 minutes before the door to the plane closes. He had never experienced the need to be in the airport 2 hours before boarding.... nor has he ever been through security checkpoint.... then the long wait to board the plane. Plus the leg room has changed. If you are sitting next to the window and need to use the restroom, forgetaboutit as it is too difficult climbing over your seat mates.

I use to fly on a regular basis. Now I don't even want to go inside an airport. But I would use train travel in a flash :)

Recognize your limitations. Do what you can for as long as you can and when it becomes stressful, stop. I have stopped traveling with my inlaws but did so for many years until the cons outweighed the pros.
