Some insurance carriers have hospice facilities where the individual can live out their final months/ days. My father passed at one during what was suspose to be a brief respite stay. We were in the process of extending his at home caregivers from 18 hours to 24 a day. I did check into the possibility of him remaining there if we could not get round the clock help at home. It was a possibility although a very expensive one as the majority of the cost would have been ours.

Hospice has many services now. If you feel you would like to know more about Hospice services and what they can or cannot offer, please call them and ask for information. They will call your doctor to obtain an order to come and visit you to discuss and assess whether the person is appropriate to meet Hospice services. It is a wonderful organization with many ways to assist or provide you with information about other community services. I'd really recommend you call just for the information.

As Babalou mentioned above, Hospice does not provide round the clock nursing care.

My Mom was in long-term-care because it would have been very difficult to take care of her at home, as she needed that higher level of care. Hospice would come visit my Mom every other day or so to check to see how she is doing.... they were another set of eyes an ears who worked hand-in-hand with the care center. Hospice was in charge of what medicine my Mom could take.

How to get Hospice? The patient's doctor has to recommend Hospice. You cannot call them and ask that they come over. It has to be through written doctor orders.

If your loved one is living at home, it is up to the family to help with the care, or to hire professional caregivers to watch 24/7. If one cannot afford that, then you would need to check with Medicaid [if you live in the States] and get the patient on that program.
