How do I talk to my husband to convince him he needs to see a neurologist?

It is very important to see a neurologist. There are some causes of dementia that can be treated. A neurologist would run tests then be able to confirm whether the diagnosis is correct and the type of dementia. There are more than 70 different ones, the most common is Alzheimer's. A second opinion with this diagnosis is always a good idea. However, many types of dementia cannot be confirmed until after death on brain autopsy.

If hubby does not want to see a Neurologist, you cannot force him to go. It is that simple. If he becomes aggressive and violent you call 911 and they can have him admitted for a 72 hour psych evaluation.

Is your husband aware of his dementia or even issues with memory? I got my mother to agree to see a geriatric psychitrist by telling her the Psy could determine if "new" medications designed to help with memory loss would be appropriate for her.

I'm with you. This is an extremely serious life-changing diagnosis. You deserve for your husband to see a specialist. Maybe that visit will confirm he is on the right treatment plan and it is fine to continue with the family doctor. Or maybe the specialist will have some different ideas for treatment and planning ahead. You simply deserve to know.

So, make an appointment and take your husband. He has dementia. He is not the decision-maker any more, not about something this important.
