I need to be okay financially In order to take of my elderly Mom.

My Mom is 90 yrs old and has a whole host of health issues including blindness. I am still of working age. I need to take care of her but how can I have an income and take care of her?

M, your mother needs assistance and YOU need to work in order to be able to retire some day.

Mom needs to apply for Medicaid if she has no savings. She needs to pay someone for the assistance that she needs. But first, you need a professional needs assessment from the local area agency on aging to determine what kind of assistance she needs (cooking? bathing? housekeeping?) and if it is feasible for her to remain at home of if it would be better if she got her care in a facility.

I would hate to ask my own Mother to pay me for taking care of her.

Mem, YOU are not the one who necessarily does the caregiving.

Call your local AreaAgency on Aging and ask for a needs assessment. Find out about local programs that she may qualify for. Get her to an eldercare attorney and do PoA for health and finances so that you can act on her behalf.

Figure out what her resources (Ssi, pension, savings) and plot that against what her level of need is.
