My brother who is 63 years old with alcohol related dementia, is an indigent whose only resource is social security from which payments for nursing home and dental care are paid. He has been in a Florida nursing home since 2013 when he was attempting to live on his own after being in several alcohol and depression related programs offered by the VA. With his Social Security and "pension" he returned to drinking which led to his being hospitalized for acholhol related dementia. I have his health care proxy, so I am responsible for his welfare. My permanent residence is in Baltimore, MD. However, for the past 3 1/2 years I have been full-time caregiver for my 92 year old mother. She has moved into an independent living facility in Florida, so I am moving back to MD. Moving my brother to Baltimore will allow me and my family monitor his care.

Thank you all for your answers. My brother's condition is such that he is not able to care of his basic needs on his own. He has long and short term memory loss. VA benefits not available for long term care because his condition is not war related. I am less worried about my Mom at this time because she is in relatively good health and she has no significant signs of dementia or alzheimers. She doesn't want to move to Baltimore.
I did find out that we must unenroll him from Florida before we can enroll him in Md. My first priority is to find a facility that will accept Medicaid and have a vacancy.
If you have any more suggestions, please send them.
I appreciate all the help I can get.
As indicated by "ThereIsNoTry" above there are many conditions that are related to Agent Orange and if he was exposed to Agent Orange the compensation would be quite helpful. And it would open a spot in a VA facility. Near me they have "Green House" and that is a 10 room house where vets live in home like settings as well as Community Living Center that is more like a "nursing home" setting or traditional facility. It is worth looking into. The list of qualifying conditions is growing.
Is there any reason you would leave your 92 mother into Independent living in Florida and move to another state? Are you comfortable with her remaining independent as she gets older. What condition is your brother in?
