Hospice services within facilities in CT.

My mother is on hospice for Cancer in CT. She has Medicare and still pays for advantage plan. Hospice people tell me and her that in CT hospice is specifically home- based, that there are no special hospice facilitiies and if we transfer my mom to the nursing home, we will have to pay from our or her money about $13000/month. There seem to be the pay for room/board, also for med. services although hospice is paid for anyway by medicare. This is an unexpected burden.. In Y 2009 in TN my father, also on Hospice was transferred to the Hospice facility St. Mary's and there he could stay indefinitely for $100 per day copay and with hospice care. Whoever knows or can give me an advice why CT is so different- I would be very grateful.

Mark, if mom doesn't qualify for Medicaid solely by income (doesnt have assets) you get to an eldercare attorney and do a Miller Trust. Google that term.

Inpatient Hospice facilities are provided by the individual hospice and that means fund raising and providing the facility and staff themselves.They still only receive the daily rate that medicare pays so providing in patient care is a huge burden. Some hospitals do have hospice floors and individual hospitals may have rooms available for short terms hospice patients but again the facility bears the cost.
Mark it does sound as though a great deal of in home care could be provided for the price that would have to be paid for a nursing home.

Yes, would love to but.. she does not qualify by income.. I did make inquiries. The hospice houses in CT do not take hospice people indefinitely. They take only for a short time if the symptoms are unmanagable.... and then - return a person home. NH is an option but.. for the price we quoted. Thanks

If she needs NH support, meaning that she needs more care than can be provided in a home environment, you might need to apply for Medicaid for her, to sustain that cost.

she is being monitored by the oncology services.. I asked the Connecticut Hospice in Branford too

Mark, you might also want to call your local Area Agency on Aging; they may be helpful. They often know the ins and outs of the local service providers intimately. You might also want to talk to the staff at mom's oncologist, if s/he is local; they may have good recommendations. If mom is not being seen locally, call the oncology service at the largest teaching hospital near where mom lives and ask for their guidance.

I don't know why there was so little to pay in 2009 in TN; my mom is in a NH in CT and the cost is about 12,000 per month. when the time comes for Hospice (she's on palliative care right now) we will need to continue paying that room and board. I know that Masonicare has inpatient Hospice, don't know if they have a dedicated facility. Connecticut Hospice I believe has it's own facility. Which organization are you talking to? You might check out the "hospice" option under "Finding Housing and Care" on this site and call around.
