My husband is in a nursing home and he is on Xanax for anxiety, so he sleeps all the time.
Even when awake, his eyes are closed for eating. How long will this go on, without the Xanax he is up all night and wont stay sitting and he is a fall risk.
I think I might discuss it with his doctor and ask to explore other medications for anxiety. Everyone is different, but there are some daily meds for anxiety that do not make you drowsy during the day. They help with mood and make you more content, but fully able to stay up most of the day.
And, there are some that can be taken just at night to help with sleeping, but they wear off by morning. I suppose Xanax has it's place, but, I'd explore other options with this doctor.
First, why is your husband living in a nursing home? What other medicines is he taking? By chance is he on blood pressure medicine?
Blood pressure medicine can make anyone feel sleepy if it is a high dosage. I know I had to have my medicine adjusted otherwise I was walking around half awake.
Is Xanax the only meds he is taking for stress as I see from your profile that he has Alzheimer's/Dementia. There are lot of prescription medicines where the side effect is drowsiness. If he is taking a half dozen different pills and all say drowsiness, no wonder he can't keep his eyes opened.
The nursing home might want to give him the pills at different times. Like the blood pressure pills and other pills that would make him sleepy, at night.
