Mother (78) leg amp. below knee (diabetes). refuses metformin, or eat right or do anything.
Dad waits on her, she does NOTHING for herself. Prosthetic leg "hurts", wont even try to use it. Cusses me out when I suggest she try it around the house for a few minutes. Very frustrating. Accuse me of being cruel.
Your poor mom. And poor you! How extremely difficult it must be to watch a loved one -- your own mother, no less -- with self-destructive behaviors.
Continue to love her. Treat her with kindness.Forgive her. Protect your own sanity by leaving her presence when you must. And realize that all of this is Not Your Fault. Support your dad, even if you don't agree he is doing the right thing.
Is she mentally competent? As long as she's mentally competent, I'm not sure you can force medical treatment on her. It's sad, but I'm not sure what could be done. Of course, if you are in charge of buying the groceries and cooking, she has no choice, but to eat what you serve....unless she orders take-out. It sounds like your dad has accepted the situation the way it is. Sometimes changing people and getting them to do what's best is very challenging.
One thing I might check out is if she is depressed. Sometimes, meds for depression might make her feel better and more likely to eat better, but, you would have to get her a consult and diagnosed. I wish you the best.
