Not liking the question from AFH: "How much do you want to pay?"

I am contacting Adult Family Homes to find a place for my mother. Some state upfront how much the room costs... others hedge around and ask what my budget is. "It's negotiable", they say. Not sure what to think about that! I don't like it. Do you have advice?

Hi, no I am not using a placement service: I dislike the scenario where the placement consultant makes a minimum of 100% commission of the first month's rent. Some of the Adult Family Homes seem to be trying to test the finances and see what can be negotiated/charged, instead of just saying what their rate is. I appreciate the more straightforward style personally. These businesses do have a lot of regulations, overhead/employee costs, and when a patient goes on Medicaid they get paid very little. But it also feels weird to negotiate the monthly fee for the care of an elderly person, I'd keep waiting for hidden charges to show up and so forth. (The flip side, I guess, is that a bed filled is a bed with some income coming in.) It feels odd to take time to schedule an AFH visit without first getting a clear answer what their base fee is.

AFH may be looking to see what facility would fit your need. If they have an idea of your budget, they'll know what you can afford. If I contacted a locator company, it is a question I would expect. Are they a locator company? Then maybe they are just matching your need with the facilities they service.

Easy, these facilities want to make sure they'll be able to get paid, Period.
