My mother-in-law was diagnosed with dementia back in August and has been in a nursing home since. For the first couple of months, my husband and his sister would visit and leave, saying how horrible she was to them. Just absolutely hateful. Won't, or can't participate in conversation, constantly picking at her face, or scalp, no eye contact. However, the last few times we've visited, she's been her old self. Truly the way she's been since I've known her for 30 years. We all wonder if she's been misdiagnosed, or is this how dementia can work?
