My sister was paid for taking care of our mom, in my sister's home. My brother was paid for cleaning Mother's part of the house. This was through the Medicaid program, administered through their county.
This was perfect for my brother who is disabled and just needed a small income to qualify for some insurance. He is an excellent cleaner, by the way. My sister had just retired from a high-paying job and I doubt the small caregiving payment made a lot of difference to her. But she said getting that check in the mail made her feel appreciated and her efforts acknowledged.
If Gramma is eligible for Medicaid that is the most likely source of payment. It won't be the equivalent of you holding a fulltime job, but it is something!
I see that GM is living in your house. Is she paying room and board? She should be if she can possibly afford it. My sister charged Mother the same amount she was paying for her small apartment in subsidized senior living. This was an awesome bargain for Mother because it included wonderful meals. It was under the fair market value of what she was getting. If Mother had not been able to pay that my sister would not have charged her.
Ceara, the vast majority of grown children are not paid for being a caregiver for their parent or even a grandparent.... unless that parent/grandparent can pay you from their own retirement fund. Sometimes certain States have programs that will pay for a relative to be a caregiver after taking some classes.
EBeach, I bet your sister was being paid through "Medicaid" and not "Medicare".. Depending on what State programs are available, some States do offer minimum wage for a limited number of hours.
My sister was paid for taking care of my mom. My mom was eligible for home health care through Medicare and somehow it was setup where my sister could do the home care and get paid hourly for it. I do not know details but I know if she is eligible for home care you should be able to be paid. There are lots of helpful people on here, I'm sure someone can help more than me. :)
