If you looking to set aside 100 hundred dollars per month, have her get $25.00 cash back when when goes grocery shopping each week using a check or debit card. Then you can take that cash and hold on to it or deposit into a separate savings account in your name.
I'd be careful making comments about cash, because they may want to see that cash and they may just add up the numbers and if that amount, plus her checking account total more than $2000., you may have trouble. I'd seek advice from an expert if you are planning on applying, doing spend down or just anticipating applying down the road. It's very tricky and some things about it are not logical, imo.
Yes the AL does accept Medicaid. I'll be really honest and say I am looking to take out like $100 a month to set aside for later so she would have extra if needed.
Also, I would be careful about giving mom much cash in AL. See if they have an arrangement with cards that can be loaded to be used for snacks, outings and the hairdresser.
As long as your mom is spending money on herself, there should not be an issue. The problem is if she is giving money away to others or paying family member's bills.
Are you certain that the AL accepts Medicaid after a period of private pay? Not all do.
