Is your father living at his home? Are you living with him? Is it he who doesn't know where all the paperwork went, or you, or both of you?
Obviously, without knowing anything about what access you have to your late mother's belongings - or if they've all been cleared out in a house move or something ghastly like that - it's extremely difficult to tackle your question.
So your dad is still alive and he still lives at home? He would likely have been beneficiary of any policy. How long has it been? Has someone helped him clean out the files and he doesn't remember? Are there literally no papers left of hers?
Do you have access to her paperwork? Look there. Look in her checkbooks for premiums paid. Did she have credit cards? Sometimes there is insurance associated with those.
